The video is also accompanied by the narration “Jokowi refuses Malaysia to become a full member of the G20, don’t underestimate Indonesia”.
Then is it true that the video post claiming Jokowi refused to allow Malaysia to become a member of the G20?
Initially the G20 was a meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, however the G20 Summit has also been attended by Heads of State since 2008 and in 2010 a discussion was held regarding the development sector.
Through an alert from Liputan6 Cek Fakta, according to an explanation from the Kemenkeu.go.id page, it is explained that the G20 or Group of Twenty is a major forum for international economic cooperation whose members are the countries with the largest economies in the world consisting of 19 countries and 1 European Union institution. The G20 represents more than 60% of the world’s population, 75% of global trade and 80% of world GDP.

At the inaugural meeting, Indonesia was present as a representative from a group of developing countries, the Southeast Asian region, and the Islamic world. In the crisis recovery phase, Indonesia is considered to have a large size and economic potential in the Southeast Asian region, which is referred to as an emerging economy.
The G20 does not have a permanent Secretariat. In the process and working system, the G20 has a host (Presidency) that is determined by consensus at the Summit based on a regional rotation system and changes every year.
In order to ensure that all G20 meetings run smoothly every year, the current year’s Presidency and the previous and subsequent presidencies (called the Troika) intensively coordinate the continuity of the G20 priority agenda.
Reporting from Kumparan, there are 3 main factors that make a country able to join the G20, namely: GDP value, international trade figures, and population. Malaysia’s GDP value is only around USD 356 billion, while the total population is around 33 million.
Meanwhile, from the World Bank’s official website, worldbank.org, Indonesia is currently in 16th place based on GDP. Indonesia’s GDP reaches 1,058 trillion US dollars and its population reaches 273.5 million people. (**)
